World Council for Health Statement on the Conflict Surrounding Ukraine

The World Council for Health (WCH) empathizes with the children, men, and women caught in the middle of the conflict between the governments of Ukraine and Russia.

The lasting impacts of war are generations-long, not only for physical and mental health, and livelihoods, but also for the environment

WCH calls for an immediate ceasefire that will stop the unnecessary instability, harm, and bloodshed, and allow life-saving supplies to reach those in need.

As our world emerges from a preventable crisis, WCH stands against the crisis of conflict escalation that will cause needless suffering for years to come.

WCH stands against unhealthy and divisive psychological tactics being used on people around the world. Instead, WCH supports the right to information and free speech, over the censorship that defined the Covid-19 chapter of our history.

War remains profitable for a few and costly for most. Global conflict has the potential to impact lives not only on the battlefield but around the world, as sanctions cause interruptions in supply chains and the flow of resources. This affects everyone.

WCH stands with the first responders and medical personnel dealing with the effects of war. WCH supports safe passage for medical doctors, relief workers, and necessary medical supplies for everyone in need.

On principle, WCH stands in opposition to any and all discrimination based on nationality or country of origin, both during and outside of known and unknown conflict.

WCH also stands with the millions of people around the world impacted by war and conflict, who do not receive significant media attention or sympathy, despite their hardships.

There is a better way through tools like dialogue, mediation, and diplomacy. That way is peaceful and constructive, and we the people can and must build it together. We have a choice. Choose peace.
